Red hats as quiet resistance — that’s the whole point of this one. The Norwegian nisselue became a protest symbol during WWII when Norwegians wore them in defiance of Nazi occupation. The Melt the ICE movement revived that tradition, and I wanted in.

The Build

The pattern called for knitting throughout, but I don’t knit — so I improvised. I did a 1x1 ribbing for the brim in actual knitting (turns out learning to knit mid-project is a perfectly reasonable approach), then switched to crochet for the body and finished the hat from there. It worked better than I expected. The transition between the two techniques is cleaner than it has any right to be.

Result

Finished February 20th, about two weeks after casting on. The tassel came together well, the brim has good stretch, and the whole thing reads clearly as what it’s supposed to be. Would make another.
